Spotlight on Apprentices

It has often been said that, at Norse, we see our staff as our most important asset, so when it comes to building our workforce for the future and equipping them with the skills they need, we place great emphasis on our apprenticeship scheme.

To achieve this we ensure our apprentices have a real job – one that has been carved out for them, linking training with hands-on experience.

Norse apprentices have clearly made an impression among Norse staff and out in the wider world; including schools, the local business sector and among the general public. They have spread the word about the value of apprenticeships with enthusiasm and demonstrated to local companies that apprentices can, and do, make a difference in the workplace.



Interview with Lewis Williams, former Norse Apprentice

Having studied IT at College, Lewis was one of the first apprentices at Norse back in 2011. Lewis is now a HR Administrator & System Consultant and an integral part of the new iTrent system:

Tell us about your journey so far at Norse.

I was one of the first apprentices in the pilot scheme and completed the course within one year! Thankfully, I was offered a full-time position in HR as an Administrator which was a great place to start my career. From December 2014, I then joined the iTrent project team which links my IT background and HR experience perfectly.

What is your average day like?

I answer queries from colleagues on the new iTrent system, I help the HR team with the system and provide training and am currently report writing to help roll out the next phase of iTrent.

Would you recommend the Norse Apprenticeship Scheme to young people?

Absolutely, it is a great way to get involved in multiple areas of a business. I did actually recommend the scheme to one of my school friends (Liam Howlett) and he is now is his first year of the apprenticeship scheme at Norse working with the Procurement Team.

What advice would you give someone starting an apprenticeship?

Don’t dwell on mistakes – learn from them! Take any opportunities offered to you. Always put time aside each week for college work.

What are your future aspirations?

Continue to work at Norse and keep progressing – I am due to finish my CIPD training later this year so am excited to see what the future holds!



For Phil Turner at GYB Services, mentoring an apprentice has been incredibly rewarding for him and his team

I believe a sound selection process to appoint the most suitable applicant is very important. Jordan, in our case, has integrated well into the current team and has brought a youthful enthusiasm to the workload. The day-release training has proved successful (provided by NTS Norwich) and regular follow-up visits from the school assessor provides us with a regular link to Jordan’s progress.

The practical experience gained from his daily work lends itself well to his course modules and Jordan will achieve his NVQ Level 2 once the course is completed.

The benefits to apprentice training schemes, for us in particular, is that targeted vehicles such as road sweepers and refuse lorries are included and this future proofs our ability to retain the best and help control quality in all aspects of the job and build for the future.





Interview with Jordan Clarke, Apprentice at GYB Services.

Having studied Engineering at College, Jordan started his apprenticeship at the Churchill Road depot, Great Yarmouth, 10 months ago:

How did you find out about the Norse Apprenticeship Scheme?

When I left college I knew I wanted to complete an apprenticeship as I really wanted to learn whilst ‘on the job’. I saw the advert in the Yarmouth Advertiser and applied. The process was very straight-forward.

Tell us about an average day at the Depot.

I start at 7am, so quite an early start! Everyday is different, which I love. There’s timesheets and paperwork to complete for each job, heavy vehicles in the workshop for service and maintenance plus there’s opportunity to attend emergency call-outs. I also have coursework to complete as part of the scheme so try and fit this in to my week as well.

Having experienced it yourself, what advice would you give someone starting an apprenticeship?

Never hold back on asking questions. The team I work with much prefer me checking with them before going ahead and doing something without their guidance.

What are your future aspirations?

I definitely want to stay within the trade as I love it and, hopefully, stay at GYB Services and Norse.
